About
Dr. Noh Young-beum

When I was a young boy, I suffered from depression and insomnia that followed three years of fighting against tuberculosis. I had both physical and mental sickness simultaneously. I prayed earnestly to break free from the dark time with no way out. I promised God, "If You save me, I will live a life of saving all people." Perhaps my prayer was heard, and I could recover my health dramatically as a savior treated me with traditional Korean herbal medicine. It is why I step into Korean Medicine.

I have a dream

I entered medical school with an earnest dream: establishing a perfect therapeutic medicine that cures the origin of diseases using Korean Medicine. It challenged me to heal mental and refractory illnesses incurable by modern medicine. My goal was to complete the perfect "healing medicine" to resolve the patient's pain and solve the suffering of humankind.

Now, it is near the goal of curing the origin of diseases that I desperately wanted. It will soon realize my dreams: relief of mental illness and the completion of the psychiatric revolution.

At first, I started studying Korean herbal medicine to uncover the secrete that had cured my disease. However, over time, I was getting far from the secret of the healing mechanism that had healed me, and I was frustrated and wandering. I tried self-reflection and contemplation as well as ongoing research and study. At last, I decided to go back to the origins and start it from scratch to learn the essence of medicine, the source of disease, and the base of Korean Medicine.

Doctors, including myself, ignored the man while treating the man's disease. It also meant that we neglected to find where the disease originated. Our treatment solely finds a clue from the result of illness, while proper medicine should pursue the causes of diseases rather than looking at the results. It is missing out on the essence of treatment when we only focus on 'what' rather than 'why.'  But every medical system has the same problem except one I have finally found. It is a medicine that tracks the patient to determine why the illness occurs and radically cures it. It is not new but has existed since ancient times in the tradition of Asian medicine, recorded in the classic Sang Han Lon (傷寒論).

Back to the origins

I started looking for the origin of the classic Sang Han Lon. It is a medical book written about 2,000 years ago. First of all, I had to accurately understand the meaning and usage of every single character in the 2000-year-old text. It took three years of work with Professor Kim Kyung-il, an expert in oracle bones studies, to finish the paleographic interpretation of Sang Han Lon. I have published Sang Han Lon: Paleographic Translation and Interpretation, co-authored by a Korean Medicine doctor and a paleographer. For the first time, the Korean Medicine community began to seriously consider the interpretation of Sang Han Lon from the original meaning of old characters.

Paleographic interpretation revealed the truth of the classic, which is the foundation of traditional medicine in Korea, Japan, and China. In short, the medical book Sang Han Lon was a clinical treatment record that carefully recorded clinical data by observing changes in the patient's body, mind, and life. It also was a Cause-curing medical book with a new paradigm of medicine that treats the phenomena of the body and mind by curing the cause of the disease. It has a diagnostic system of seven diagnostic patterns classified by the bodily reactions for the reasons that caused the conditions; it lists the state of body and mind that caused the illnesses and principal complaints. As far as I know, Sang Han Lon is a medical book that is unparalleled in the history of medicine; it reveals the cause of diseases and how to cure them fundamentally.

I started clinical practices according to the true spirit of Sang Han Lon based on the original meaning of the time of writing. I began to find shocking and truly astonishing results markedly different from previous clinical practices. I thoroughly verified each clinical case, produced countless treatment cases, and established big data. It is the source of the book titled Clinical Sang Han Lon - Practical application of Sang Han Lon to mental illness and intractable disease. Based on the new interpretation of Sang Han Lon, I could present clinical healing cases and guidelines for clinicians with a new paradigm.

Solution for mental disease

Clinical Sang Han Lon was the base of my treatment process to cure mental and intractable diseases. The process is represented by a brand, 'Soulution', or 'Soul Solution' project focusing on treating mental disorders. It introduced the protocol of the treatment process--that is, the four-step healing process consisting of diagnosis, healing, adaptation, and training. While applying this healing process in actual clinical practice, I received unexpected healing results in numerous mental and intractable diseases. It was a good sign for the "fundamental treatment" that I longed to reach so eagerly. To inform the general public of these academic achievements and the clinical healing process, I have published Soulution - A New Path to Healing Mental Disorders. It is a rebirth of Sang Han Lon, one of the bibles of Asian medicine for 2000 years, for the general public of the modern age.

The greatest strength of 'Medicine of Sang Han Lon' or  'Soulution,' which revived the 2000-year-old Sang Han Lon text for the modern age, is that it can heal any disease by removing the mind and body difficulties that caused the illness. "The body and mind systems broken by the disease will return to normal if we only restore the humans' healing power and resilience that humans have. Local and branched conditions occurring in the human body will disappear naturally." These are the most significant advantages of 'Medicine of Sang Han Lon' or  'Soulution.'

The future medicine

Korean Medicine has a tradition from ancient therapy that has contributed to treating human diseases for 3,000 years. However, modern medicine was established about 200 years ago and treated as a part of science. It has many advantages over local treatment, with good results for infectious diseases, emergency treatment, acute disease, and surgery. On the other hand, Korean Medicine is holistic and suitable for causal treatment with many strengths in chronic and functional diseases, especially neuropsychiatric diseases. The ideal medicine model is, in my opinion, to maximize the advantages of modern and traditional medicine; and to realize 'integrated medicine' that recognizes each other.

It was an arduous road for me, a Korean Medicine doctor, to treat mental illness. It was a road that no one went on, and nobody challenged. I was lonely, desperate, and frustrated a lot. But I  had one dream: establishing a perfect therapeutic medicine that is completed by curing the origin of diseases using Sang Han  Lon, the base of Asian medicine; healing mental or refractory illnesses incurable by modern medicine; solving the suffering of humankind. I have always longed for it to come true. Now I have the confidence that these dreams of mine can come true.

Perhaps 'Medicine of Sang Han Lon' will change the history of medicine, introducing a new treatment paradigm, and I am sure that it will undoubtedly contribute to humankind. Now, I earnestly hope that my dream will come true and become a significant milestone in medical history.

Dr. Noh Young-beum is MD-PhD in Korean Medicine. He is the founder and chairman for 13 years of the 'Korean Society of Sang Han Geumgwe Medicine', for the studies of Sang Han Lon. He has been in clinical practice for 35 years and runs Noh Young-beum Clinic, specializing in treating mental and intractable diseases.

He is one of 'Top 50 KTM Doctors' and '21 Power Elite People who move the KTM'. He has been a professor and lecturer at Dongguk University, Kyunghee University, and Pusan National University School of Korean Medicine. He is currently giving online lectures for KTM doctors.
He has been working to popularize KTM by contributing articles to the JoongAng Ilbo about the healing of mental illness he led. He also writes health columns such as 'Longer' and 'Noh Young-beum's Soulution' for various media.

In particular, he focused his efforts on revealing the truth of Sang Han Lon, one of the bibles of Asian medicine in Korea, Japan, and China, interpreting it based on the original meaning with the help of paleography. He tries to establish  fundamental 'healing' by tracing the 'cause' of disease and ultimately developing traditional medicine into a 'healing medicine.' His ultimate goal is to 'relieve mental illness' and complete the 'revolution of psychiatric medicine' based on Sang Han Lon.
